Prof Frances Shiely

Frances is Full Professor of Clinical Trials in the School of Public Health and Director of Education at the HRB Clinical Research Facility, ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork. Her research focuses on trials methodology to ensure trials are efficient, inclusive, sustainable, and fit for purpose. She has extensive experience in developing and leading national and international research and education programmes. She currently leads the PRECIS-3 project, which supports the design of trials with a pragmatic or explanatory intention. Frances founded and is director of the suite of clinical trials training programmes in UCC: PG Cert. Clinical Trials, PG Diploma in Clinical Trials, and MSc in Clinical Trials. Within the GREEN-TRIALS project, she contributes methodological and educational expertise to support the development of more environmentally sustainable clinical trials.

Dr Jitka Rychlickova

Jitka is a clinical pharmacologist and Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacology at Masaryk University, where she teaches basic pharmacology as well as clinical pharmacology and therapeutics to undergraduate medical students. In recent years, her focus has increasingly shifted toward education in clinical trial methodology, informed by her hands-on experience in the design, conduct, and management of clinical trials. Developing a curriculum that integrates sustainability principles into the design and conduct of clinical trials is therefore a natural extension of her existing teaching, research, and clinical trial management activities.

Dr Sarah Prowse

Sarah Prowse is a Research Fellow at the HRB Clinical Research Facility UCC, collaborating with Prof. Frances Shiely on the Erasmus+ GREEN-TRIALS project. As part of GREEN-TRIALS, she is involved in the design of open-access educational resources that support the environmentally sustainable conduct of clinical trials through education and capacity building. Her work spans clinical research, information science, and emerging applications of AI, with a focus on inclusive curriculum design, global health inequalities, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Martina Esdaile

Martina Esdaile is the Communications & Training Manager at ECRIN. Martina has over 15 years of experience in both project management and instructional design. She will be primarily supporting the communications and visibility of the project, along with contributions throughout the project to the curriculum, teacher's guides and website. 

Vincent Russell

Vincent Russell graduated with a BSc in Business Information Systems and went on to complete an MSc in Multimedia Technology in UCC, before moving to London in 2001 to work in the music and media industry. He has extensive cross-functional experience in multimedia, digital marketing and production, gaining him multiple industry awards. He is currently undertaking a PhD in Digital Arts & Humanities / Computer Science, researching the effects of Spatial Audio on short-term memory in Virtual Reality Learning Environments (VRLEs). 

Dr Adriána Papiež

Adriana is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacology at Masaryk University, with seven years of experience as a clinical pharmacist in an intensive care unit. She is actively involved in teaching clinical pharmacology and therapeutics to undergraduate medical students. She has contributed to several academic clinical trials, working both as a project manager and as a member of clinical research teams. Over the past year, she has focused on public and patient involvement in clinical research and serves as an EUPATI trainer in Czechia. She sees her involvement in the Green Trials project, focused on sustainability and more environmentally responsible clinical research, as another step in her work toward improving the quality and responsibility of clinical research. 

Dr Amélie Michon

Amélie Michon is Head of Clinical Operations at ECRIN, overseeing the provision of operational services to the management of multinational clinical trials and coordinating the network of European Correspondents (local experts) in ECRIN countries. With over 20 years of experience in clinical research, Amélie will contribute her knowledge of the European clinical research landscape and the initiatives underway across the continent to support the development of the GREEN-TRIALS learning materials. 

Dr Joana Batuca

Joana Batuca is an Invited Researcher at NOVA Medical School and Senior European Correspondent for Portugal at ECRIN, with extensive experience in coordinating clinical trial management, training, and capacity building at national and European levels. She has played a key role in developing and delivering training programmes that equip PhD students and early-career researchers with practical knowledge and skills for clinical trial design, regulatory frameworks, and data integrity.

Joana holds a PhD in Pharmacology from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, has participated in multiple investigator-initiated trials, and served as an Invited Professor of Pharmacology at NOVA Medical School. She supervises MSc students and actively fosters excellence, innovation, and responsible research in health. In parallel, she contributes to EU initiatives and collaborative projects that support high-quality, cross-border clinical research. 

Prof. Seamus O'Reilly

Prof. O’Reilly graduated from the National University of Ireland (Galway) (BSc 1985, MB BCh BAO 1988, MD 1997) and completed basic specialist training in Trinity College Dublin (MRCPI 1991) and higher specialist training in Medical Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and completed a PhD in Clinical Investigation at Johns Hopkins University where he was Assistant Professor of Medicine focusing on Phase I Drug Development. He was a Principal Investigator in the Gynecologic Oncology Group and on return to Ireland established Cancer Clinical Trials units in Waterford and Cork allowing patient participation in pivotal breast cancer trials such as RespondX, PALLAS, SOLE, and HERA. He is currently Consultant Medical Oncologist at Cork University Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork. In 2020 was appointed Vice Clinical Lead of Cancer Trials Ireland and elected to the Executive Board of the Breast International Group in 2021.

Since 2013 he has been National Specialty Director in Medical Oncology at the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland and has co-developed an online multidisciplinary course in Cancer Medicine for General Practice with ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork. In 2021 he organised the first National Cancer Retreat. He is founding editor of the journal Cancer Professional. In the community, he is a founding trustee of Cork ARC Cancer Support House, a cofounder of the South Eastern Cancer Foundation, and has led and developed nurse education and financial hardship patient funds at CUH Charity, and the CUH-India appeal for Unicef in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In society, he has spoken at the European Parliament about the impact of the pandemic on patients and healthcare workers.

He has over 100 peer reviewed publications related to cancer therapeutics. Ongoing research projects at the present time include secondary prevention assessment in breast cancer survivors, the impact of expanded access programs in Oncology, cybersecurity and cancer care and the impact of litigation on breast cancer care in Ireland. In 2021 he will assume the Clinical Lead role at Cancer Trials Ireland.

Michaela Beníšková

Michaela Beníšková is a master’s student of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Masaryk University, currently completing the final year of her studies. Driven by her passion for pharmacy and natural products, she has taken part in numerous projects, completed internships in hospital pharmacies, and joined the Erasmus+ exchange programme. Her diploma thesis is carried out at the Department of Natural Drugs, where she explores the potential of nature‑derived medicinal resources. To further strengthen her connection to nature and support sustainable innovation in research, she is now part of CZECRIN, contributing to the GREEN-TRIALS project. 

Prof. Zoi Dorothea Pana

Zoi Dorothea Pana is Professor of Paediatrics and Epidemiology and Associate Dean for Research at the University of Nicosia Medical School (UNIC). Her research focuses on paediatric infectious diseases, epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), infection prevention, vaccine research with a growing emphasis on inclusivity and representation in clinical research through European initiatives such as the READI IHI Horizon project. She was actively involved in several EU-funded projects, including VACCELERATE, IDEALITER, and VERDI, and contributes to One Health research and education, including the development of a forthcoming Master’s programme. She is recently appointed as Coordinator of the International Pediatric Association (IPA) Working Group and a member of the ESCMID Executive Committee on Fungal Infections Study Group (EFISG).
