A big thank you to the incredible UCC team of dental students, dental hygiene students, dentists and nurses, who delivered an outstanding Healthy Athletes – Special Smiles screening in Cork last Saturday.  

Claire’s award-winning research, “Oral Health and Care Practices in an Irish Residential Facility,” was recognised for its strong clinical relevance and contribution to the field. Her research was supervised by Professor Martina Hayes (UCC), Professor Gerry McKenna (QUB) and Dr Francis Burke (UCC), with additional contributions from Dr Danielle McGeown and Dr Elizabeth Moloney.

The Hatton Award is an international competition that recognises excellence among early-career researchers in dental science and attracts exceptional candidates from leading institutions worldwide. Claire’s achievement reflects both the quality of her work and its impact within a highly competitive field. She represented the Irish Division at the General Session, having previously won the Irish Division Postgraduate Research Award in Barcelona in June 2025.

This success highlights the strength of ongoing research in Special Care Dentistry and is a proud achievement for both Claire and her supervisors.

The All-Ireland Interprofessional Healthcare Challenge (AIPEC) is an annual intervarsity competition. It brings healthcare students from across Ireland together to work in interprofessional teams to develop and present a patient-centred management plan for a complex clinical case.

From registration through to the final session, the seminar maintained strong attendance and enthusiastic participation, reflecting the appetite for continued learning and clinical excellence within all members of the dental team.

The citation for Professor Lynch’s award recognised his outstanding international contribution to dental education, scholarship, and professional leadership - in particular highlighting Professor Lynch’s international reputation as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Dentistry since 2011 and his achievement of Membership of the Royal Irish Academy in 2023 (the latter regarded as the highest academic honour in Ireland). In its 240 year history, Professor Lynch is the 3rd dentist to have been admitted to Membership of the Royal Irish Academy, and the first since 1940.

The College of Medicine and Health Interprofessional Simulation Group and ASSERT Simulation Centre ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork, were proud to pilot undergraduate/pre-registration Interprofessional Simulation sessions recently, bringing together students from Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Diagnostic Radiography.

On Tuesday October 28th the seventh consecutive IPL Dementia Workshop took place in the Aula Maxima ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork.

World Oral Health Day celebrated annually on March 20^th provided the ideal opportunity to raise awareness of the importance oral health, to general health, mental wellbeing and quality of life, emphasising, the mind, body, and mouth connection.  

Lead by DentSoc dental nursing, dental hygiene and dentistry students, with staff from Cork University Dental School and Hospital (CUDSH) as a Team had a wonderful opportunity to engage with each other and with the public in Cork University Hospital (CUH) and Cork University Dental School and Hospital (CUDSH). ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork (UCC) Department of Student Health supported the day, with information on oral health being promoted in the Student Health Department, Crow’s Nest. Dental Health Foundation, Ireland (DHF), supplied leaflets and posters tailored to the promotion of oral health in Ireland.

Big congratulations to the DClin Dents who recently received a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) in Oral Surgery in October 2024.

Professor Lynch was honoured at a recent conferring ceremony in Hong Kong on 17th November 2024.

The citation for Professor Christopher Lynch highlighted his “contributions to the fields of Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education have been exemplary and groundbreaking”.

On Thursday, December 5th, staff of Cork University Dental School and Hospital and Oral Health Research Centre celebrated their contribution at the Long Service Awards.

Professor Chris Lynch of the Cork University Dental School & Hospital has been awarded the prestigious Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA).

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Seminar for Dental Nurses, Hygienists and all members of the dental team will be held on Saturday 17 February 2024 at 9am.  

‘Rethinking Policy, Protection and Prevention.’

This presentation reported on the findings of the clinical study into oral health in Adults with Cystic Fibrosis. This study was carried out in conjunction with the Adult CF Unit in CUH,  and received funding from Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, the Health Research Board and CiSA funding from UCC. Niamh was a recipient of a European CF Society Travel Grant 2023. This study forms part of her PhD research, which is being supervised by Dr Martina Hayes, Prof Anthony Roberts and Dr Frank Burke.

Professor Chris Lynch has been installed as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Professor Lynch is the twentieth Dean of the Faculty, and he will serve a term of 3 years.  

The Clinical Pledge ceremony was held at ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork for BDS3 and BDS4 on 17  January 2023.

The theme of the meeting was 'Trauma - What's new and what should I do?' Cork Univeristy Dental School and Hospital (CUDSH) was well represented in the O'Mullane Priace by 4th year students, Lauren Chandler, Rosie Donnellan, Brigitte, Hudy-Yuffa & Rachel O'Donoughue and by Paediatric Senior House Office Dr Cal McCarthy. 

NEWS: The CARL community-academic research partnership and projects with the Eating Disorder Centre Cork raise awareness about eating disorders and helps connect people with specialist support. This week the research partners came together to promote the value of this type of research and as part of the wider effort to raise awareness during Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2019 #EDAW2019. 

This event was held to mark the development of the 3rd year BDS students as future dental professionals.  At UCC, BDS 3 Students commnence the journey of assuming responsibility of leading and managing care for their patients.

The Oral Health Research Centre have just launched three short videos  under the HRB-funded Knowledge Exchange and Dissemination Scheme (KEDS) Project

The aim of these videos is to raise awareness of oral health in the public at large and among service providers through social media and on-line training modules.

The annual scientific meeting of the Irish Division of the IADR was held in Belfast on October 17th and October 18th.  This is the main forum to present oral, dental and craniofacial research in Ireland and provides a key opportunity to showcase research undertaken in the Cork Dental School and Hospital.  It is a particularly important forum for early career researchers.

This year, in 2024, we are delighted to be celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the National Dental Nurse Training Programme of Ireland (NDNTP) that was established jointly in 2004 by Cork University Dental School and Hospital (CUDSH) and the Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH).

Our Clinical Skills Laboratory enables a state-of-the-art teaching system to simulate clinical cases in a realistic environment. The laboratory has been recently re-equipped with modern dental simulators.
