Claire’s award-winning research, “Oral Health and Care Practices in an Irish Residential Facility,” was recognised for its strong clinical relevance and contribution to the field. Her research was supervised by Professor Martina Hayes (UCC), Professor Gerry McKenna (QUB) and Dr Francis Burke (UCC), with additional contributions from Dr Danielle McGeown and Dr Elizabeth Moloney.
The Hatton Award is an international competition that recognises excellence among early-career researchers in dental science and attracts exceptional candidates from leading institutions worldwide. Claire’s achievement reflects both the quality of her work and its impact within a highly competitive field. She represented the Irish Division at the General Session, having previously won the Irish Division Postgraduate Research Award in Barcelona in June 2025.
This success highlights the strength of ongoing research in Special Care Dentistry and is a proud achievement for both Claire and her supervisors.

The citation for Professor Lynch’s award recognised his outstanding international contribution to dental education, scholarship, and professional leadership - in particular highlighting Professor Lynch’s international reputation as Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Dentistry since 2011 and his achievement of Membership of the Royal Irish Academy in 2023 (the latter regarded as the highest academic honour in Ireland). In its 240 year history, Professor Lynch is the 3rd dentist to have been admitted to Membership of the Royal Irish Academy, and the first since 1940.

World Oral Health Day celebrated annually on March 20th provided the ideal opportunity to raise awareness of the importance oral health, to general health, mental wellbeing and quality of life, emphasising, the mind, body, and mouth connection.
Lead by DentSoc dental nursing, dental hygiene and dentistry students, with staff from Cork University Dental School and Hospital (CUDSH) as a Team had a wonderful opportunity to engage with each other and with the public in Cork University Hospital (CUH) and Cork University Dental School and Hospital (CUDSH). ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork (UCC) Department of Student Health supported the day, with information on oral health being promoted in the Student Health Department, Crow’s Nest. Dental Health Foundation, Ireland (DHF), supplied leaflets and posters tailored to the promotion of oral health in Ireland.

This presentation reported on the findings of the clinical study into oral health in Adults with Cystic Fibrosis. This study was carried out in conjunction with the Adult CF Unit in CUH, and received funding from Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, the Health Research Board and CiSA funding from UCC. Niamh was a recipient of a European CF Society Travel Grant 2023. This study forms part of her PhD research, which is being supervised by Dr Martina Hayes, Prof Anthony Roberts and Dr Frank Burke.
