Bestselling author Dr Sue Stuart-Smith to visit UCC for 鈥楾he Well-Gardened Mind鈥 event on nature and wellbeing

Acclaimed psychiatrist, psychotherapist and bestselling author Dr Sue Stuart-Smith will visit 晚上福利在线观看 Cork (UCC) on Tuesday, 5 May for a special public conversation exploring the connections between nature, gardening and mental wellbeing.
The discussion will centre on Dr Stuart-Smith鈥檚 bestselling book The Well Gardened Mind, which explores why, in an increasingly urbanised and technology-driven world, reconnecting with nature has become more important than ever for health.
Since publication, The Well Gardened Mind has been translated into eighteen languages and has helped shape conversations on how engaging with nature can enhance health, wellbeing and confidence.
Rediscovering nature in the modern world
Dr Sue Stuart-Smith studied English Literature at University of Cambridge before qualifying as a doctor and building a distinguished career in psychiatry and psychotherapy. She worked for many years in the UK National Health Service, including as Lead Clinician for Psychotherapy in Hertfordshire, and later worked with DocHealth, supporting doctors experiencing stress and burnout.
In 2023, she co-founded The Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity and Health with her husband, acclaimed garden designer Tom Stuart-Smith, creating opportunities for schools, charities and underserved communities to connect with nature.
Promoting sustainability and environmental action
Dr Stuart-Smith will be joined in conversation by Professor Maggie O鈥橬eill, Director of UCC Futures: Collective Social Futures, and leading voices from psychology, sociology, art history and community wellbeing including Dr Susannah Chapman, Lecturer in Sociocultural Anthropology at UCC; Dr Sabine Kriebel, Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Art History at UCC; and Dr Naomi Masheti, Psychologist (CBT Therapist), four-time UCC graduate and programme director of the Cork Migrant Centre.
The event has been made possible through support from UCC Futures 鈥 Collective Social Futures and a UCC Green Campus Award, reflecting the UCC鈥檚 continued commitment to sustainability, wellbeing and public engagement.
