Dr. John Mackrill was recently awarded funding of €195,086 from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, for a project entitled Small-molecule Modulators of Oomycete Calcium Channels (SMOCC). 

Congratulations to David Burns, a PhD trainee with Professor Ken O’Halloran at the Department of Physiology, who will receive the prestigious Usha Award from the American Physiological Society at Experimental Biology in April.

The Department of Physiology assembled on the 23^rd May 2017, the evening of the viva voce examinations for annual awards event at the close of the academic year.

Research from the Department of Physiology was showcased at the RAMI Section of Biomedical Sciences Annual Meeting, hosted by Trinity College Dublin, June 22nd 2017. 

Professor Ken O鈥橦alloran presented at the International Union of Physiological Sciences meeting in Rio de Janeiro, August 2017. Ken鈥檚 talk on: 鈥淗ypoxia-induced diaphragm dysfunction: Strengthening the case for antioxidant intervention in respiratory patients鈥� was part of a symposium: Diaphragm plasticity in ageing & disease: Therapies for muscle weakness go from strength to strength! 

Research from the Department of Physiology, published this month in The Journal of Physiology, describes physiological deficits and compensation at play in a mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a devastating neuromuscular disease affecting about 1:3,500 live male births. 

Staff and trainees from the Department of Physiology attended the Oxford Conference on the Control of Breathing, which was held at Merton College in September 2017, returning to Oxford, the site of the first meeting in the series, after 39 years on an international roadshow.The conference brought together world leaders in the field of respiratory control and modelling.
