The Marine Geoscience Group in collaboration with the British Geological Survey and University of Glasgow present a novel ArcGIS Pro toolbox. Confined Morphologies Mapping (CoMMa) Toolbox is an ArcGIS Pro toolbox created for semi-automated morphological mapping.

The Marine Geoscience group at UCC and the Marine Institute present the Irish Shelf Seabed Geomorphological Map, the first high-resolution  geomorphological map of the entire Irish continental shelf. Explore it !

Recent thoughts from PhD researcher John Appah

If you have ever wondered how the Irish seabed looks like at 700 metres depth, this post is for you!

Gerard Summers, one of our PhD Researchers, has been hard at work creating a workflow that will allow semi-automated processing of seabed sediment wave data.

Felix reports back from a survey on the Celtic Voyager to assess the Mobility of Sediment Waves and Sand Banks(MOVE) in the Irish Sea.

Members of our group are in midst of analysis. Dr. Mateos-Cardénas is currently working on how cold-water corals are coping with microplastics.

The exploration of geophysical data from the Irish Sea allows the scientific team to build a ground model, furthering their understanding of the area through time.

Since 1996 Prof. Andy Wheeler has been progressing our understanding on earth processes, more specifically in the marine domain.  

Students from NUIG, Maynooth and UCC took part in an two day practical course on board the RV Celtic Explorer. 

Contributors from UCC and beyond explore Irelands coastline with 800 pages of original maps, illustrations and more. The Journal.ie annouced it as the "Best Irish Based-Publication of 2021".

This week, PhD student Luke O'Reilly from the UCC Marine Geology Research Group travelled to Bremen, Germany for the ECORD training course in MARUM. Luke explained the trip as an experience that "has given him a comprehensive insight into life aboard an IODP expedition".

Over the past few months, I have been collecting all the existing information that I can find about the seabed off the south coast of Ireland.

This is Gerard here. My first few months of research have been gaining an understanding of the pre-existing literature and processing a complete set of multibeam data that we collected in Cork Harbour.

Dr Jürgen Titschack visits the UCC Marine Geosciences Research Group

Researcher Luke has recently traveled to MARUM in the University of Bremen, to collaborate with Dr. Jürgen Titschack, a sedimentologist who specializes in heterozoan carbonates and CT processing of cold-water coral cores.

Last week, Professor Andy Wheeler and PhD researcher Gerard Summers attended a very successful launch to the MarPAMM project at the Whistledown hotel in Warrenpoint.

Professor Andy Wheeler, Dr Aaron Lim and PhD student John Appah from the UCC Marine Geology Research Group accompanied by  Professor Luis Conti from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil travelled to the Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy's (MaREI) Beaufort Building in Cork Harbour for a workshop to showcase what the group was doing.

Our newest member of the team, PhD researcher Gerard Summers, joined the UCC Marine Geology Research Group last week under the MARPAMM project which stands for Marine Protected Areas Management and Monitoring.

We have just arrived back from our 10 day research cruise on board the RV Celtic Explorer.

We recently showcased 'Ireland's Cold-Water Coral Reef Experience' at 'Cork Discovers - 2019'.

Last month Andy, John and Luke travelled to Ghana on a working visit to explore collaboration options between three selected institutions in Ghana: University of Mines and Technology (UMAT) Tarkwa, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and technology (KNUST) Kumasi and University of Cape Coast (hereafter, UCC Ghana). A series of talks were delivered by the team, exploring concepts and ideas of environmental monitoring in extreme environments, in particular those including Cold-water corals (CWCs) along the Irish margin.

PhD Researcher, Gerard Summers, is currently lending a hand to the MI and INFOMAR (Integrated Mapping for the Sustainable Development of Ireland’s Marine Resource) and is mapping the southern Irish sea territory using the cutting-edge sonar technology available aboard the RV Celtic Explorer.
