“An international team of scientists led by Dr. Thomaz Bastiaanssen, a researcher in APC Microbiome Ireland (APC), a world-leading SFI Research Centre based at ���ϸ������߹ۿ� Cork has published a two-part methodological guidebook to the analysis of the microbiome-gut-brain axis in the leading international scientific journal Nature Mental Health.  

APC rolls out a host of activities during Science Week 2023.

Patients suffering from prolonged symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are commonly grouped as having ‘difficult-to-treat IBD’ that requires ongoing and particular treatment approaches. Until now, there has been no standard set of definitions around this which has hampered research and therapeutic strategies.

APC Researcher Dr Friederike Uhlig has won an SFI-IRC Pathway Award for her project GO-AHEAD "Gastrointestinal Oxytocin is importAnt in HEalth And Disease"

A core aim of APC Microbiome Ireland’s (APC) strategic Vision 2021‐2026 ‘Making a Difference through Microbiome Science’ is to foster a culture of entrepreneurship and partner with relevant stakeholders to establish new, investor‐ready spin out companies.  To support this, in 2023 APC has launched a new Entrepreneurship Bursary competition with funding awards of up to €5,000 to allow researchers to develop ideas or existing technologies/IP for a new spin‐out company through the generation of proof‐of‐concept experimental data.

Congratulations to APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre Principal Investigator Prof Ines Thiele who has been awarded a €2 million European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant to spearhead the transformative project AVATAR. This award represents the 6th APC ERC success in the last five years. Prof Thiele leads the Molecular Systems Physiology Group at University of Galway.

Monday, 20^th November 2023 (Cork) – Professor Paul Ross, APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre (APC) and ���ϸ������߹ۿ� Cork (UCC) was today announced as SFI Researcher of the Year 2023 at the Research Summit, a joint Summit hosted by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Irish Research Council (IRC).  

Clarivate has published its Highly Cited Researchers 2023 list which features 13 researchers from APC Microbiome Ireland, a world leading SFI Research Centre based in ���ϸ������߹ۿ� Cork (UCC) and Teagasc. The 13 APC researchers are among a total of 33 Irish researchers listed.

An annual highlight for APC, our 2023 Symposium was a great success. The APC family gathered from all over the country to immerse ourselves in the latest developments in microbiome science. UCC President Prof John O’Halloran opened the day with a warm welcome and set the tone for a brilliant role of speakers.  APC Director Prof Paul Ross gave an APC Overview highlighting the achievements and impacts of the past year.

It was 20 years ago when we wrote a letter to Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) while both still working in Teagasc asking ‘was there someone we could collaborate on an infant health nutrition programme’.  We got a letter back saying they were really too busy and had none.  Somehow Tony Ryan got hold of this correspondence and the rest is history.
