ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork is celebrating the success of the Anatomy and Neuroscience teaching team. Led by Dr Mutahira Lone, the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience have been awarded the Higher Education Authority's prestigious Disciplinary Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Assessment DELTA Award. This award marks a significant milestone for the Department and reaffirms its ongoing commitment to excellence in teaching and learning at UCC.

Congratulations to Dr Elisa Cintado Reyes and Dr Federico Granziera postdoctoral researchers in the Aburto Laboratory who have recently been awarded a prestigious IRC Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship. 

The Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, was delighted to recently host Iain Keenan Professor of Anatomical Education, School of Medicine, Newcastle University as guest speaker in the Department of Anatomy's popular Seminar Series to deliver a seminar titled Exploring 3D Anatomy and Embryology in Medical Sciences Education.

Dr. Harriët Schellekens, APC Microbiome Ireland, Senior Lecturer in Anatomy and Neuroscience at UCC and leading expert on the hunger hormone ghrelin, joins Barry Skillington of Atlantia Clinical Trials to unpack the complex biology of appetite and the science behind GLP-1 medications. They explore how these drugs affect appetite and food reward pathways, why they represent a major step forward in obesity treatment, and why they are not designed as a shortcut for weight loss in people without obesity.

Unhealthy foods early in life leave lasting brain and feeding changes, but gut bacteria can help restore healthy eating, a new ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork (UCC) research study has found.

Congratulations to Dr Patricia Flynn who was conferred with a PhD at the UCC College of Medicine and Health Conferring Ceremony on Tuesday 11th November 2025.

Congratulations to Dr Cristina Cuesta Marti who recently graduated with a PhD at the UCC College of Medicine and Health Conferring Ceremony on Tuesday 11th November 2025.

The BSc Neuroscience class of 2025 were conferred with their BSc Neuroscience degrees at the College of Science Engineering and Food Science Autumn Conferring Ceremony on Tuesday November 11th 2025. 

Congratulations to PhD students Jolie Morisho and Adam O'Mahony from the Sullivan, Collins and O'Keeffe lab, who both successfully defended their PhD theses on 7th November 2025.  The lab marked this remarkable event by joining with the examination team for a group photograph.

The Western Gateway building was a hive of activity on World Anatomy Day as Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork (UCC) marked World Anatomy Day,  inviting the public to enjoy the wonders of human anatomy with multiple hands-on interactive events.

Congratulations to Professor Siobhain O’Mahony, Principal Investigator in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience UCC, faculty member of the APC Microbiome Ireland and co-founder of FemmeBiome, on her appointment as President of the Irish Pain Society.

Researchers at INFANT Research Centre and Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, have identified early biological signs of autism in the umbilical cord blood of newborns, opening up new possibilities for earlier detection and support for children and families.

Brain Connections: Advances in Research and Support was successfully held in the Western Gateway Building on Saturday 14th June 2025;  a very popular and informative public engagement event which focused on brain health and neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Congratulations BSc Neuroscience Class 2025 who completed their viva exams recently.

As partners on a European consortium across six countries, Professor Nolan and Professor Olivia O’Leary Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, UCC will investigate if certain lifestyle interventions prevent cognitive deficits in older aged people with depressive symptoms.

International Women’s Day on March 7th 2025 was celebrated in a very informative women's health research and innovation event. Organised by Anatomy & Neuroscience PhD students Ashley Benge and Saoirse Kelly in Professor Siobhain O'Mahony's research group, the event featured a dynamic mix of poster presentations showcasing the work of female researchers and innovators and groundbreaking studies in women’s health, alongside engaging talks and panel discussions.

Defining what distinguishes the unique actions of insulin and studying the role that certain bacteria play in metabolising bile acids in our guts in people with inflammatory bowel disease are the two ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork (UCC) projects to receive funding under the Research Ireland Frontiers for the Future Programme.

Congratulations to Professor Yvonne Nolan, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, and APC Microbiome Ireland who was invited to present her research on the role of gut microbiome in Alzheimer’s disease at the Society for Neuroscience conference in Chicago on 7^th October 2024.

Research from Professor Yvonne Nolan’s group features in the New Scientist magazine. PhD student Sebastian Dohm-Hansen who researches the middle-aged brain under the supervision of Professor Nolan, Dr Jane English and Dr Aonghus Lavelle, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, was interviewed by David Robson to contribute to the feature article in the New Scientist issue on 20 July 2024.

A very busy UCC Open day saw great interest in the BSc Neuroscience stand at the recent Open Day. Students interested in the BSc in Neuroscience degree gathered to chat with academic staff, undergraduate and post graduate Neuroscience students, working in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience.

The BSc Medical and Health Sciences programme recently hosted its annual Meet and Greet Coffee Morning, officially marking the launch of the Year 1 Mentoring Programme for this academic year.

Dr Mutahira Lone, Director of the MSc in Human Anatomy programme in UCC and Professor Gerard O'Keeffe Head of Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, congratulated the class of 2024 on their conferring at the UCC College of Medicine and Health Conferring Ceremony on 25th October 2024.

Congratulations to Dr Mutahira Lone, Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy who was presented with the John Kelly award for Outstanding Innovations in Teaching in Further and Higher Education.

Dr Siobhain O'Mahony is one of the researchers from eleven countries across Europe who were recently awarded nearly €7 million to develop AI-based diagnosis methods and innovative interventions for Endometriosis.

Dr Siobhain O'Mahony and Dr Mariarosaria Cuozzo, were invited by the Hospital Professional News Ireland Journal, to contribute an article to their October issue which focused on Women's Health.

Dr Harriët Schellekens, has recently been awarded a second Biostime Institute for Nutrition and Care BINC research funding award for her project NourishMind: Unravelling the Impact of Early-Life High-fat, High Sugar Diets on Neuro-Cognitive Development and Gut-Brain Pathways.

Congratulations to Ms Shelley O’Shea, Senior Executive Assistant in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience who was conferred with a BSc (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Coventry University Summer Conferring Ceremony on the 19th July 2024.

Dr Harriët Schellekens (Project Beneficiary), Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience, ÍíÉϸ£ÀûÔÚÏß¹Û¿´ Cork, and funded investigator with APC Microbiome Ireland, has recently received funding of €572,976 under the HORIZON Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks programme awards for her research project ‘Advancing Research at the Intersection Between Gut Microbiota and Cancer Cachexia to Train Europe’s Future Leaders in Microbiota Medicine’.

Dr Siobhain O’Mahony, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and Principal Investigator in APC Microbiome Ireland, was conferred with an Honorary Fellowship by the College of Anaesthesiologists Ireland Faculty of Pain, at a formal ceremony in College of Anaesthesiologists in Merrion Square, Dublin on the 21st June 2024.

The Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience held its sixth Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday 10th March 2026.  A very special event in the calendar of the College of Medicine & Health at UCC; the multi denominational Thanksgiving Service once again brought together families of donors, staff and students Anatomy, in a musical and reading celebration.
