PPI Ignite @ UCC Hosts In-Person Introductory Workshop on Public and Patient Involvement

The workshop introduced the basics of PPI, highlighted practical case studies, and encouraged open discussion to support attendees in integrating PPI into their research.
The workshop began with a short icebreaker, giving attendees the chance to get to know one another while highlighting the importance of 鈥渨arming up the room鈥� when working in PPI settings.
We then moved into an overview of the fundamentals of PPI, covering what PPI is (and what it is not), and clarifying the distinctions between involvement, participation, and engagement. This session also explored why and when to incorporate PPI, alongside practical examples, different approaches to involvement, and relevant theoretical frameworks.
Next, attendees were introduced to real-world case studies, including work from the IDEAS study and examples from computational biology. These illustrated the tangible impact PPI can have, from shaping surveys and improving dissemination materials to informing recruitment of PPI contributors. Practical guidance was also shared on workshop logistics, developing a terms of reference, effective communication, and signposting to useful resources.
The session concluded with an interactive group discussion, where participants applied their learning by planning a PPI strategy using the 鈥�5 Ws鈥� of involvement. This session sparked strong peer learning, with attendees sharing experiences, ideas, and practical insights with one another.
