Course Outline

To gain understanding of advanced engineering and non-engineering issues relevant to offshore wind energy systems design, construction, operations, finance, and governance.
Course Content:
- Energy storage for offshore wind energy
- Wind and wave loading of offshore structures
- Offshore operations and maintenance and system lifecycle
- Offshore wind resource estimation and forecasting
- Design, manufacture, durability and test of materials for offshore wind energy
- Economics of offshore wind energy
- Environmental impacts of offshore wind energy
- Marine governance and the regulatory regime
Stack this Microcredential into a Postgraduate Certificate
This microcredential is part of a suite of six 5-credit microcredentials which can be stacked towards a Postgraduate Certificate in MetOcean for Offshore Wind.
You can choose to take any of these microcredentials individually, or if you successfully complete all six microcredentials within three years of starting your first microcredential, you will be awarded Postgraduate Certificate.

Additional Teaching Mode Information
How many classes are held per week, and at what time of day?
One class per week , Mondays 1-3pm . However, times may vary depending on guest lecturers’ schedules.
The venue is the Sustainable Futures Room (G2), Iris Ashley Cummins Building (formerly Civil Engineering Building).
Course Practicalities
- The programme is a blended programme.
- Lectures take place in person but there is no requirement to attend. We will provide recordings and all course materials through our e-learning system, Canvas.
- There will be one class visit to the National Ocean Test Facility in Ringaskiddy , Co. Cork, subject to lab availability (transport is not covered).
Assessment
Assessment is completed through assignments, there is no end-of-module written exam.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate how the offshore environment influences the design, operation, integration and decommissioning of energy systems.
- Describe scientific and engineering concepts relevant to offshore wind energy generation.
- Describe the economic and regulatory environment related to offshore wind energy projects.
Requirements
Programme Entry Requirements:
Applicants should hold a primary degree (min. Second Class Honours Grade II) in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) (180 ECTS credits or equivalent) from a recognized third-level institution, in Geography, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Biology, Oceanography, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or a related discipline.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Applicants from other disciplines, including those in the Arts or Social Sciences, may be eligible to apply through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
To be considered, applicants should have a demonstrable interest and/or 2 years experience in the coastal and/or marine industry, and who can offer sufficient numerical abilities.
If you wish to apply via RPL, you must select 'Yes' to the RPL question when completing your application in UCC Apply.
- As part of the application, you will be required to submit:
- A Personal Statement outlining your motivation for applying and detailing relevant work or life experience.
Any other relevant supporting documentation evidencing your prior learning - please refer to the for details on appropriate evidence.
Fees and Costs
Programme Fee:
The full programme fee is €900. If you are not eligible for the below funding the course fee is €900.
Skillnet Funding:
Skillnet Offshore Wind Academy is dedicated to fostering skills and expertise in the field of green technology. Skillnet Offshore Wind Academy is partnering with UCC on the Introduction to MetOcean for Offshore Wind micro-credential to fund part of the course fee for eligible participants.
Skillnet subsidise the programme fee by €400. Skillnet funded applicants pay: €500
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
- Applicants must be based in the Republic of Ireland to be eligible.
- Applicants must be employed within private enterprise/self-employed.
Companies
Key requirements regarding the eligibility of businesses to participate in funding:
- Companies must be from private enterprise based in the Republic of Ireland.
- Skillnet Ireland funding is not available to public sector bodies or organisations that are publicly funded such as community-based not-for-profit companies or charities.
- Commercial semi-state companies are eligible providing that income contributed to a Network is not sourced from the public purse.
- Sole traders are eligible as Companies.
