Poet Nuala N铆 Dhomhnaill visits UCC
It was a honour to welcome the internationally acclaimed poet, Nuala N铆 Dhomhnaill, back to her alma mater on 13 March 2018. She spoke to Final Year students who are studying her work and answered their question with honesty and erudition. Later that evening, she gave a public reading in the Quad that was enjoyed by all in attendance.

Congratulations to Andrea Palandri, who was recently conferred with the degree of PhD for his thesis on the Marco Polo story as found in the Book of Lismore. The thesis was supervised by Prof. 脫 Mach谩in.

Gaeltacht Semester 2018-19

Second-year students (Gaeilge and History) who are spending the first semester in the Gaeltacht of Corca Dhuibhne. This is the first time for UCC to trial this exercise in flexible learning. It represents a partnership between the Department of Modern Irish, The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne.

Author Colm 脫 Ceallach谩in speaks to 2nd Yr MA students

The short story writer, Colm 脫 Ceallach谩in, spoke to Second Year students about his award-winning collection I dT铆r Mhilis na mBeo (Cois Life, 2017) as part of GA2019 which is taught by Dr Isobel N铆 Riain. He also met with students taking the Creative Writing module in the MA in Modern Irish for a lively seminar facilitated by Dr Ailbhe N铆 Ghearbhuigh. As well as taking us through his creative process, he spoke eloquently about his experience in the Basque country as part of the European project 'Other Words' (see ). This is a residential exchange programme among minority language communities across the EU with a view to creating networks between writers and minority cultures and to highlight the importance of language diversity. Foras na Gaeilge is responsible for the organisation of the scheme in Ireland. Colm is pictured here with Ailbhe and some of the MA students, Ant贸in, Nicole, Sin茅ad and Caoilann.
Performance of 'Scorach Ghlionn谩in'

An Cumann Dr谩ma铆ochta gave a tremendous performance of 鈥楽corach Ghlionn谩in鈥 by Brian 脫 Baoill on 23rd October. The venue, upstairs in the Spailp铆n F谩nach, was packed to capacity. Directed by Aisling Nic C谩rthaigh, twenty students were involved in the production. Treise leo!
GA3008 Seminar with Darach 脫 Scola铆

The novelist, playwright and publisher, Darach 脫 Scola铆, visited UCC recently to speak to Final Year and MA students about the contemporary novel. Darach is pictured here with Dr Eimear N铆 Chinn茅ide and some of the students taking GA3008 An t脷rsc茅al sa Ghaeilge. Afterwards, students in the MA in Modern Irish joined Darach for an informal seminar in the Seomra Caidrimh where they discussed fiction and publishing, as part of the Creative Writing module taught by Dr Ailbhe N铆 Ghearbhuigh. Also present for the discussion was Dr Isobel N铆 Riain, who teaches the poetry of Nuala N铆 Dhomhnaill and Biddy Jenkinson on the MA in Modern Irish programme.
